AZERBAIJAN · LAND OF FIRE
Fire, mountains and the Caspian shore.
From Baku’s walled Old City and the Flame Towers to eternal fires, mud volcanoes, the striped Candy Cane mountains and the Silk Road palace at Sheki.
Only in Azerbaijan
Only Azerbaijan does these.
Old towns and mountain views you’ll find all across the Caucasus. A hillside that has burned for centuries, mountains striped like candy, and a palace lit through hand-set coloured glass you won’t. Build the trip around them.
Land of Fire
Fire That Never Goes Out
Azerbaijan is the Land of Fire, and the Absheron peninsula is where the name comes from. Yanar Dag is a hillside that has burned without pause for centuries. Ateshgah is a temple where pilgrims once worshipped the flame. And the ground itself bubbles: Gobustan sits among more mud volcanoes than anywhere on earth.

Candy Cane Mountains & Khinalig
North of Quba the hills come striped in red, white and cream, the folded rock the locals call the Candy Cane Mountains. Keep climbing and the road reaches Khinalig, one of the highest and oldest continuously inhabited villages in Europe, perched above the clouds at 2,300 metres.

The Silk Road
Sheki’s Palace of Light
In the Caucasus foothills, the old Silk Road town of Sheki keeps a summer palace built without a single nail, and windows of shebeke, thousands of pieces of coloured glass and wood locked together by hand. Late in the day the light pours through and the walls turn to colour.

The classics
Azerbaijan’s Most Popular Tours
Gobustan, the fire temple, the Candy Cane mountains, Baku’s Old City. The trips most travellers come to Azerbaijan for.
Plan it from Baku
Almost everything is a day trip from Baku.
The capital is base camp. Three roads lead out. Pick a direction and you’ve got your day.
By region
Pick a region.
Baku for the Old City and the Flame Towers. Gobustan for the fire and the mud volcanoes. Quba for the striped mountains and Khinalig. Sheki for the Silk Road. Each one is its own day.
By tour type
Or choose how you spend the day.
A city tour for your first day in Baku. A walk through the Old City walls. The boulevard and the Flame Towers after dark. Wine in the hills, a long lunch on the road, a private driver if you’d rather not share.
Inside the walls
The Old City on foot.
Baku’s walled Icherisheher is a UNESCO maze of caravanserais and hammams, the Maiden Tower at one end and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs at the other. Three walks we’d book to read the stones.
After dark
Baku after the lights come on.
The Flame Towers turn into a screen of fire, the boulevard fills up, and the Old City glows from below. Our three favourite ways to take the city at night.
